cOMMENTS: - - I was aboard the USS America on a "Tiger Cruise" with my Marine Son. I was allowed to wander all over the ship at will, and I returned to the forecastle many times because of ceremonial significance of the forecastle. My son explained that often, promotion ceremonies are held there. For the rest of my life I will be gratefull to the Navy for giving me the oportunity to live life aboard an aircraft carrier with my son. The food was damn good too! Happy to see that Navy beat Army today!!
In case anyone questions my statement below. YES. I served nearly 30 years before I retired from the navy. Served on six ships, around the world twice, two wars, and There's still NO PLACE LIKE HOME.
There's been a number of occasions where an anchor has snagged undersea cables and damaged them.... The cables have included both communication and electrical power supply cables.
Been there done that. USS America (CV 66) 1974 -1977. We anchored out everywhere in the Med. Quite the evolution dropping the anchor. Guaranteed to trash the focsle. Let the anchor go and it sounds like a freight train ripping down the track followed by a cloud of dust and rust.
Would it be interesting is to know if one of those links snapped when pulling up the anchor. Man that would be a frightening and dangerous spectacle with the tremendous Force upon it.
