While I was in the US Air Force I was stationed in Turkey for four years and I had to do a lot of travel throughout the country. At the time Turkish Airlines (THY) was the only domestic airline and a lot of the THY pilots were ex-fighter pilots. Some of the airports have very short approaches due to the geography and require their very unique abilities. Most of the time their take-offs and landings were as if they were still flying their F-16's and I thought it was awesome, but not everyone appreciated their immense skills.
Awesome catch! Would you be okay with me featuring this in my series Weekly Dose of Aviation? Of course you will be credited both in the video and in the description. Thanks!
I am such a lucky man that I did my military service at the base where Solo Turk is located. At that time Solo was Turkish Pilot Yusuf Kurt. I witnessed his constant rehearsal flights. While people were rightfully fed up with the extremely loud noise and were covering their ears, I was watching the sky with admiration. When I saw the soldiers watching him with admiration like me, my esteemed commander Yusuf Kurt was flying lower. Or so we believed.
On the last day of our military service, an aviation festival was held at the closed Akinci base. Fighter pilots came from many countries of the world. We were incredibly relieved when we witnessed two captain pilots from Pakistan and India watching Commander Yusuf's demonstration with their mouths open and a surprised expression. We were so proud.
I once booked a "Safari Tour" with Jeeps through the "woods and mountains" of Turkey. These guys were totally crazy. Driving fullspeed and overtaking busses and cars without sight and close to the precipice (no barriers whatever) while the photograph guy was jumping from one jeep to another. I thought I got killed but I had the fun of my life. I can definitely the recommend this tour!
