When I was about three years old my father made a trip wire alarm because someone was stealing coal from our coal pile. (This back in 1949, when it was still legal to heat your home with coal.) He hooked the wire to set off a Big Ben alarm clock.
You could hear those things go off from two blocks away on a quiet night. When the alarm went off, the thief started running and never came back.
