Sequoiadendron giganteum is a species belonging to the Sequoiadendron genus of the Cupressaceae (Cypressiaceae) family. giant sequoia; it is also known as giant red pine, Sierra red pine, Wellingtonia or simply as John Muir[2] the big tree. The only living species belonging to the genus Sequoiadendron are 3 species in total in this family, together with Sequoia sempervirens and Metasequoia glyptostroboides in the subfamily Sequoioideae, known as conifers or needle trees belonging to the Cupressaceae family. Giant sequoias are the largest trees in the world[3] and usually only grow naturally in groves on the western slopes of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains.
At first it was thought that the naming of the genus was to honor Sequoyah (1767–1843), who created the Cherokee curriculum in Josiah Whitney's 1986 book The Yosemite Book.[5] A research publication on naming in 2012 concluded that Australian Stephen L. Endlicher was responsible for naming. Endlicher, a linguist and botanist, corresponded with experts in the Cherokee language, including the Sequoia language he admired. At the same time, he realized that; The fact that the newly classified genus of each seed in the cones followed a mathematical pattern with the four genera in the suborder could, incidentally, be described by the Latin word sequi (to follow). Endlicher used this name both to describe the tree's genus and to honor the native he admired.
Despite their giant size and adaptation to fire, the population of giant sequoias, which is seriously endangered by the trigger of various measures against forest fires and by the effect of climate changes, has decreased gradually in the last decade. In the 2020 California wildfire, this species lost over 10-14% of its population. Reducing the current combustion load with foresight plays an essential role in saving the species.
