The picture of the Merlin 102 is one of my images taken at the RAAF Museum, RAAF Base Point Cook, Australia.
The Merlin 102's were used in Lincoln bombers in RAAF Service and this was prior to the engine going on display in the Museum. Great to see the various engines firing up!!!!
The info panels fail to mention that the PV-12 was developed using knowledge gained from the 37 litre 2800HP 'R' engine developed for the Schneider trophy winning
Supermarine S.6B designed by RJ Mitchell from Stoke-on-Trent which itself evolved to become the Spit following the issuing of Specification S7/30. Ok, enough with the facts, listening to four Merlin's on a Lanc always gives me the shivers!
There should be clutch / gear system between engine & propeller , So it permits engine to start first & after that propeller can join party , does it safe & possible ?
What is the peak torque RPM for these monsters? They are indeed a marvellous piece of machinery, but keep in mind that their main purpose was to kill folk and destroy property. Noble …….hey????
What a waste of a precious piece of aviation history! It should be in the hands of an aviation concern instead of some noise jockey!!
